What Is Encapsulation?
Encapsulation is a specialised form of double-sided lamination in which a printed sheet is completely enclosed between two layers of laminating film. The films are permanently bonded together not only across the surface of the print but also beyond all its edges, creating a continuous sealed border.
As a result, the paper is completely isolated from the surrounding environment, providing excellent protection against moisture, dirt and everyday mechanical wear.
Unlike standard double-sided lamination, encapsulation protects not only the printed surfaces but also the edges of the paper, which are often the most vulnerable part of a document.
Many Names – One Technology
The same process is described using several different terms in the printing and finishing industry. Some names refer to the technology itself, while others describe its end result or the way it is carried out.
The most common terms include:

- Sealed lamination
- Edge-sealed lamination
- Laminating with a sealed border
- Laminating with a clear border
Although different names are used, they all describe the same principle: the printed sheet is completely enclosed between two layers of laminating film that are permanently bonded together beyond the edges of the paper.
How Is Encapsulation Different from Standard Double-Sided Lamination?
Although both processes use laminating film on both sides of the sheet, the final result is significantly different.
In standard double-sided lamination, the film covers both sides of the paper but finishes at its edges. The printed surfaces are protected, while the edges of the sheet remain exposed.
With encapsulation, the laminating film extends beyond all sides of the printed sheet. Outside the paper, the two film layers are permanently bonded together, forming a continuous sealed border around the entire document.
It is this sealed border that distinguishes encapsulation from ordinary double-sided lamination.
Why Is the Sealed Border So Important?
The effectiveness of encapsulation depends largely on the quality and consistency of the sealed border surrounding the document.
If the laminating film finishes exactly at the edge of the paper, moisture and contaminants can eventually reach the exposed paper fibres. Even perfectly laminated surfaces cannot provide complete protection under these conditions.
A properly formed sealed border isolates the paper from the environment, significantly increasing the durability and service life of the finished product.

Encapsulation is recommended whenever printed materials are expected to withstand intensive handling or demanding environmental conditions.

Can Every Double-Sided Laminator Perform Encapsulation?
No. Although both double-sided lamination and encapsulation use two layers of laminating film, they require different material handling and machine capabilities.
In standard double-sided lamination, the machine is designed to laminate both sides of the sheet. After separation, the film usually finishes flush with the edges of the paper, leaving them exposed.
Encapsulation works differently. Both layers of laminating film must extend beyond all edges of the printed sheet and bond together to form a continuous sealed border. This requires precise film alignment, controlled spacing between sheets and a separation process that preserves the sealed border around every document.
For this reason, encapsulation is not simply a matter of selecting different machine settings. The laminator itself must be specifically designed to support this process. As a result, not every double-sided laminator is capable of producing encapsulated documents.
Encapsulation Using Laminating Pouches
In office laminators, encapsulation is most commonly performed using laminating pouches.
A document is placed inside a pre-formed pouch consisting of two sheets of laminating film joined along one edge. During lamination, the two film layers bond together around the entire document, creating the same sealed border that characterises professional encapsulation.
Although this method is intended primarily for individual documents and low-volume applications, it is based on exactly the same principle as industrial encapsulation.

Encapsulation is intended for applications where maximum durability and complete protection—including the edges of the paper—are essential.

The effectiveness of encapsulation depends less on the laminating film itself than on the quality of the sealed border. Even the highest-quality film cannot provide complete protection if the film layers are not permanently bonded beyond the edges of the paper.
